This week, let’s take a look at resistance in our ongoing series of “Enhancing our ACIM Practice.”
We must be aware of resistance in our practice of A Course in Miracles. It can occur in various forms. First of all, we are drawn to the Course. It found its way into our lives and here it is. We love the words and we are drawn to its beauty. Yet, practicing it is where the resistance comes in.
I speak of this from my own personal experience. I do not share with you anything that I have not dealt with myself. I came to the Course easily, however, I had many life-defining moments where I was ready to throw in the towel in more ways than one.
- I was subjected to abuse in various relationships including as a child with an abusive mother.
- I was raped.
- Two of my three children were molested by an ex-spouse.
- I lived near poverty at one point in my life with my two oldest children.
- I’ve dealt with health issues.
- I had self-esteem, self-love, self-confidence issues.
Even when I wanted to give up on life, on love, and on this Course, I persisted. You can too.
In the Workbook for Students, Jesus tells us plainly that we will not like the ideas, understand them, or being opposed to them. Then, he gives us his wisdom, just do them anyway. By the practice of the Lessons, we will come to know and understand.
Even our resistance itself can be used in our practice of A Course in Miracles.
We are not to judge it. We observe it. By doing so, soon it will be released. The ego wants what it wants and will do so by any means necessary.
You are given the tools by Jesus to counteract the ego and realize peace in your life. Use them and use them often.
That’s what I did. That’s what transformed my mind and my life. I am at peace. I am happy. I still have occurrences where I will feel anger or sadness. Yet, I am mindful. I remember my Source. I remember Love. I do not ignore what I feel. I allow it to ebb and flow as needed.
As I say, everything that comes across our screen — the people, places, and things that seem to upset us — are there for a reason, if we so choose. What is that reason? To forgive. What is forgiveness? Seeing it with Love. We do not have to agree, but we can decide not be disturbed by what it is.
Resistance is also a distraction. We become seriously distracted by what is out there in the world. Someone should change. Something else should be different.
Accept what is with no judgment. Be mindful. Have awareness. Practice non-attachment.
What do they say? What we resist, persists? Well, the ego will always persist in its scheme to divide us from the Divine. Holy Spirit also persists, but quietly and patiently.
We all know about procrastination. Procrastination is another form of resistance.
We are uncomfortable. We know that. We want our lives to be happier and more peaceful. That’s why we picked up the Course — to make our lives matter.
The ego will draw us into conversations that do not serve us. It will lay the path for our destruction in fanciful ways. It will place shiny new baubles in our face. Do you know what those are for you?
We are not weak but strong. Do not tell yourself otherwise. You have all the power with you to assist you. What can you set into place for yourself to counteract?
Excuses. Excuses are another way we resist our practice. Think now of what those excuses are for you.

“The Course is too hard… I’m too set in my ways…. too old…too busy…I can’t get quiet…I don’t have the proper tools I need…I need more books on ACIM…I don’t like to meditate…”
And so forth. You know exactly what I mean.
It’s all: Resistance. Distraction. Procrastination. Excuses.
Are you ready?
Use the following to counteract Resistance in all its forms:
Dedication. Devotion. Discipline. Practice. Persist.
Dedicate yourself right now to the practice.
Devote yourself to spending time for the practice.
Discipline yourself by setting a schedule to study and do the practice.
Practice, practice and more practice.
Persist in this always. It will unfold and in the unfolding and the awakening you will be free.
Here’s an excerpt from a post I created on the same subject a few years ago:
If we feel vehemently opposed to an idea, (the practice of meditation or the symbol of the “light”) or any idea, we have to remember it is a defense. After all, it is just an idea. Why would it disturb our peace if it is only an idea? Yet, if we are disturbed we have not made this idea neutral. We have dug our heels in. We attack the other position (however subtly we may) and we defend strongly our own opinion. The more we defend our opposition, the more bricks are laid in the wall of separation. As Jesus tells us in Lesson 170:
You make what you defend against, and by your own defense against it is it real and inescapable. Lay down your arms, and only then do you perceive it false.
Only the ego would defend itself. Truth needs no defense.

You can do this. You have support. We here at MiraclesOne are dedicated to the idea of practical application. We do not just speak the words, we live in our daily lives. We share from our own personal experiences. We do not wish to debate, analyze or dissect A Course in Miracles. We want to experience it.
In the experience is where we learn what A Course in Miracles is all about.
Join us in study group or class or another event if you feel so led. See our event calendar for details.
Peace Be With You,
